I am a CLIA- Accredited Cruise Counselor (ACC)- that means I'm an experienced world-wide traveler and travel planner who has deep knowledge and passion for planning amazing vacations for you!  I focus on ocean and river cruise vacations, along wit...

Many customers ask about the experience of sailing a trans-ocean crossing - either a Transatlantic or Transpacific cruise.  2023 is my year of ocean crossings!  I was fortunate to experience both a Transpacific cruise in the spring and a Transatlantic cruise in the fall!

Many trans-ocean cruises are repositioning cruises.  The Cruise Lines are moving key ships based on changing seasons and the deployment focus for the season ahead.  For example, many cruise lines identify ships that will cruise Alaska in the northern hemisphere summer season, and then reposition those ships by having them travel from Vancouver BC or Seattle down to Hawaii and eventually those ships make their way to Australia and New Zealand in the northern hemisphere's autumn.  That positions those ships perfectly to serve the summer season in the southern hemisphere, where they sail Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and many south Pacific islands!

Likewise, the ships that move from the Caribbean to Europe travel eastbound to Europe in late March and April each year and spend the summer and fall in Europe.  Then in October/November, those ships are often assigned itineraries in North America and the Caribbean, so they travel westbound to complete their repositioning.

Traveling across either ocean takes some time, so these are often longer cruises of 13 to 18 nights.  They're often not the itineraries chosen by first time cruisers, however, they are perennial favorites of long-time seasoned cruisers.

You might wonder if a tran-socean repositioning cruise is just day after day on the ship with no land in sight.  That's not the case! These cruises often have fun and unique port destinations (think French Polynesia) that you don't often get to visit during traditional deployment seasons!  Yes, you may have 4 or 5 days straight cruising across the ocean.  And you may or may not like the prospect of that.  I find it to be a wonderful experience!

It's a terrific time to explore many parts of the ship, and its venues, that you don't have time for during a port-intensive sailing. It's a time to make new friends, or enjoy the many activities and entertainment shows that are often available.  Like any cruise, a Transatlantic or Transpacific is all about what makes a great fit for you.  Reach out to Next Wave Cruising anytime, and we'll help you sort out your ocean crossing options and help make lifetime memories on a very special cruise journey!
